What stops it citing a case that does not exist?

Two things. Every cited passage is checked against a fixed list of approved public sources, so there is little to invent from. Then four deterministic checks run over the output: every citation in the text must be in the verified set, every quote must appear verbatim in its source, low-confidence sections are capped, and every URL must come from an approved authority.

What are the four gates, exactly?

Match-set, quote-verbatim, confidence-floor and closed-world-url. They are set-membership and string operations, not a second model's opinion.

What do the verdicts mean?

Verified: the citation resolves in its source and the detail matches. Needs a check: the source could not be reached, or the check has not run yet. Not found: it does not resolve, the quote does not match, or the metadata disagrees.

Does 'verified' mean the answer is right?

Accepted Answer

No. It means the authority exists, resolves in its source and the quoted words are really there. Whether it supports the proposition it is cited for is the supervising lawyer's judgement.

Can I see which sources it was allowed to use?

Yes. 'Where we looked' on any answer lists the approved domains for the matter's jurisdiction, grouped and ranked by authority, with the refused list beside them.

How do you rank sources?

By authority. Courts and legislation come first, then regulators and official publishers, then everything else. Each case also carries a treatment signal from the Citator, so you can see how later courts have handled it. The ranking is visible in Where we looked, on every answer.

What if my matter's jurisdiction has no approved list yet?

The product says so. Research there runs at open-web quality with the same deterministic gates, and the output states that it did not have an approved list rather than implying it did. More jurisdictions are added as sources are certified.

Does it search Westlaw or LexisNexis?

Accepted Answer

No, deliberately. Westlaw, Practical Law, LexisNexis, Bloomberg Law, Justis and vLex are refused. We will not send your client's material into a subscription your firm has not licensed, or cite a source you cannot open.

OSCOLA, OSCOLA-Ireland, Bluebook, or your firm's house style. Neutral citations and pinpoints throughout.

Can we stop work leaving the firm when an authority could not be confirmed?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Turn on 'hold work with a failed authority' and work citing an authority the firm checked and could not confirm cannot be shared externally or exported to Word or PDF. An authority that still needs a check never blocks anything, the product offers the check instead. An owner or admin can override with a note, and the note is recorded in the audit and compliance register.

Can AI make up legal cases that do not exist?

Yes, and it has, in more than one country. In England and Wales, for example, the Divisional Court heard Ayinde v London Borough of Haringey and Al-Haroun v Qatar National Bank together in June 2025, [2025] EWHC 1383 (Admin), because submissions in both matters cited authorities that did not exist. The court used the judgment to set out what it expects of lawyers who use AI. LegalAI Space exists because a citation should be checked against the source before a lawyer reads it, not after a judge does.

How do I know an AI-generated citation is real?

You should not have to take the tool's word for it. Every authority in a LegalAI Space answer carries a verdict, verified, needs a check or not found, and a Where we looked panel that shows the sources that were searched. Verified means the passage was found, verbatim, on an approved public source. Anything else is flagged for a human.

What does a regulator say about AI in law firms? Take the SRA.

Regulators are converging on the same two concerns, and the SRA in England and Wales is the sharpest example. It published a warning notice on the misuse of AI on 17 August 2026, naming fabricated citations and client confidentiality when material goes into public AI tools. It said it had received 42 reports of potential AI misuse in the year to July 2026. The SRA does not certify products, so no vendor can honestly claim its approval, and the same is true of most regulators. What a firm can do is show its supervision and its records, which is what the audit register and the How this was made tab are for.

Is using AI a breach of professional rules?

No. The SRA, and most regulators like it, regulate outcomes rather than tools. What breaches the rules is filing something you did not check, or putting privileged material somewhere it should not go. Both are supervision questions. The product is built so the supervising lawyer has the verdicts, the sources and the record in front of them before anything leaves the firm.

Is it safe to put client data into ChatGPT?

Consumer AI tools are not built for privileged material. In England and Wales, for example, the SRA's 2026 warning notice singled this out, and the Law Society has said that sharing case details with public tools will likely breach client confidentiality. LegalAI Space keeps documents in a UK Azure region, never trains on them, screens prompts for personal and client data before a model sees them, and lets your firm run inference on its own provider key.

What is shadow AI, and why does it matter for a law firm?

Shadow AI is fee-earners using consumer AI tools the firm has not sanctioned, usually because the sanctioned route is slower. It matters because the firm carries the confidentiality and supervision risk without the record. The practical answer is a workspace that is quicker than the consumer tool and leaves a trail: a matter, a run, verdicts, and an audit register.

There is no blanket rule, and firms and jurisdictions take different positions. The SRA's guidance in England and Wales, for example, emphasises transparency and supervision rather than a fixed disclosure obligation. What every position needs is a record of what was used and what was checked. Every run in LegalAI Space keeps that record on the matter.

What is a legal citator, and does this product have one?

A citator tells you how an authority has been treated since it was decided: followed, applied, distinguished, doubted or overruled. Westlaw and Lexis call theirs KeyCite and Shepard's. The Research Agent runs a Citator sub-agent that assigns a treatment signal from public sources and shows the citing cases, so you can see whether an authority is still good law before you rely on it.

No. Client documents, matter chats and agent runs are never used to train or fine-tune any model, ours or a provider's.

Yes, immediately, at document, chat, matter or run level. Deleting the firm removes all of its data. Ask support for written confirmation of deletion if a client or regulator needs it.

Two-factor authentication with an authenticator app is available to any user from Settings, on any plan. SAML single sign-on is on request rather than a plan feature, ask us before you plan around it.

Frontier models, the GPT-5.6 family today, with more added as they are certified. Default models can be set separately for chat, agents, skills and document vision.
